Alexandra González Defends Master's Thesis on the Classification of Pre-Trained Models for SE tasks

Jul 28, 2025

GAISSA team member Alexandra González successfully defended her Master's thesis in July 2025. Her research introduces a new taxonomy to automatically classify thousands of Pre-Trained Models from open-source repositories for Software Engineering tasks, providing a valuable resource for practitioners and researchers in the field.

In July 2025, Alexandra González defended her thesis “An Automatic Classification of Open Source Pre-Trained Models for Software Engineering”, as part of the Master’s degree in Advanced Telecommunication Technologies.

The work explores how to support Software Engineering (SE) practitioners and researchers in selecting the most suitable Pre-Trained Models (PTMs) from the growing number available in open-source repositories. To this end, she proposed a taxonomy covering 147 SE tasks and used it to classify PTMs in Hugging Face. By examining model card descriptions, metadata, and associated scientific abstracts, she identified 2,205 PTMs relevant to SE.
