GESSI Participates in FSE 2024, Presenting Research on Green AI

Jul 17, 2025

Members of the GESSI team traveled to Brazil to participate in the ACM FSE 2024 conference. The team's contributions included the presentation of GAISSALabel, a new tool for the energy labeling of ML models, and participation in the "2030 Software Engineering Workshop" to help shape the future of sustainable software.

Members of the GESSI research group actively contributed to the ACM International Conference on the Foundations of Software Engineering (FSE) 2024, held in Porto de Galinhas, Brazil. The team's participation highlighted key advancements and strategic discussions related to the GAISSA project.

Joel Castaño Fernández presented "GAISSALabel: A tool for energy labeling of ML models" in the conference's Demonstrations track. This web-based tool, a direct outcome of the GAISSA project, provides an intuitive labeling system, similar to those on consumer appliances, to assess the energy efficiency and environmental impact of ML models. GAISSALabel evaluates both training and inference phases, considering metrics like power consumption and emissions, making sustainability tangible for all ML stakeholders.

In addition, Xavier Franch contributed to the forward-looking "2030 Software Engineering Workshop". This strategic event gathered experts to define a research roadmap for the next decade of software engineering. A core theme of the workshop was "sustainable software engineering," aligning perfectly with the mission of GAISSA and ensuring the project's goals are part of the conversation shaping the future of the field.
