GESSI Team Showcases GAISSA Research at ICSE 2024
May 05, 2025
Members of the GESSI team presented research linked to the GAISSA project at the premier International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) 2024 and its co-located workshops (CAIN and MSR). Contributions focused on green AI, covering software design decisions, ML model evolution on Hugging Face, and architectural approaches for greener ML serving.
The GESSI research group actively participated in the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) 2024 and its associated workshops, presenting key findings related to the GAISSA project's goals of developing greener AI-based systems. Several members presented their work:
Santiago del Rey Juárez presented his doctoral symposium project titled "Software Design Decisions for Greener Machine Learning-based Systems" at the CAIN (AI Engineering – Software Engineering for AI) workshop @ ICSE 2024. This work directly addresses the architectural focus of GAISSA for achieving sustainability in ML.
At the MSR (Mining Software Repositories) conference @ ICSE 2024, Joel Castaño Fernández presented the paper "Analyzing the Evolution and Maintenance of ML Models on Hugging Face", co-authored with Silverio Martínez Fernández, Xavier Franch and Justus Bogner. This research provides insights into the lifecycle of ML models, crucial for understanding their long-term environmental impact.
Also at the CAIN workshop @ ICSE 2024, Francisco Javier Durán López presented the paper "Identifying architectural design decisions for achieving green ML serving", co-authored with Silverio Martínez Fernández, Matias Martinez and Patricia Lago. This presentation focused on practical architectural strategies for reducing the environmental footprint of ML services during operation.
