GAISSA members Joel Castaño and Silverio-Martínez Fernández participated in the DLBCN 2023 symposium to present a poster of their paper titled 'Exploring the Carbon Footprint of Hugging Face's ML Models: A Repository Mining Study.'
We are thrilled to announce that our latest research paper, titled "Analyzing the Evolution and Maintenance of ML Models on Hugging Face" has been accepted for presentation at the International Conference on Mining Software Repositories (MSR2024).
Exciting news! Our research paper, titled "Identifying architectural design decisions for achieving green ML serving" has been accepted for presentation at the International Conference on AI Engineering – Software Engineering for AI (CAIN2024)!
In November 2023, GAISSA members visited the FrAmeLab research group at the University of L’Aquila to discuss sustainable and intelligent software systems. The visit included an invited lecture on AI sustainability and fostered collaboration on energy-efficient computing and responsible AI-driven development.
Members of the GESSI team presented research linked to the GAISSA project at the premier International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) 2024 and its co-located workshops (CAIN and MSR). Contributions focused on green AI, covering software design decisions, ML model evolution on Hugging Face, and architectural approaches for greener ML serving.
GAISSA member Silverio Martínez Fernández delivered an invited talk on sustainable machine learning systems at the Erasmus Mundus SE4GD (Software Engineers for Green Deal) Summer School 2024 in Santiago de Compostela. The presentation focused on measuring and optimizing the energy efficiency of ML systems, a core research area within the GAISSA project.
Silverio Martínez-Fernández and Santiago del Rey from the GAISSA project delivered an extensive tutorial on "Software Engineering for ML Systems" at the Ibero-American Advanced School of Software Engineering (EIbAIS), co-located with the CIbSE 2025 conference. The tutorial combined theory and hands-on lab sessions on MLOps practices.
In October 2024, the GESSI research group organized the 18th ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement (ESEM) in Barcelona. The event featured a special advanced school focused on green and sustainable software, directly aligning with the goals of the GAISSA project and bringing leading experts to the UPC.
Members of the GESSI team traveled to Brazil to participate in the ACM FSE 2024 conference. The team's contributions included the presentation of GAISSALabel, a new tool for the energy labeling of ML models, and participation in the "2030 Software Engineering Workshop" to help shape the future of sustainable software.
In December 2024, Silverio Martínez-Fernández delivered a keynote address at the 25th International Conference on Product-Focused Software Process Improvement (PROFES) in Estonia. His talk, centered on the environmental sustainability of machine learning systems, showcased key research themes from the GAISSA project to an international audience.
